The new owner of Manchester City, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, has hinted that Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) could back a £135million bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo in January.

The agreement of an ADUG takeover deal at Eastlands was announced on Monday and was followed by the shock capture of Real Madrid forward Robinho for a British record fee of £32.5million.

Chief executive of Hydra Properties, Al-Fahim is reportedly 10 times richer than his counterpart at Chelsea, Roman Abramovich, and he has revealed there are plans to bring in a 'minimum 18' players to the club.

"Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious," Al-Fahim said in The Guardian.

"Real Madrid were estimating his value at $160million (£90m) but for a player like that, to actually get him, will cost a lot more; I would think $240million (£135m). But why not? We are going to be the biggest club in the world, bigger than both Real Madrid and Manchester United."

It is also reported City will look to target the likes of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas as the club aim to build a side capable of achieving success in Europe's most prestigious competition.

Al-Fahim added: "We want a team who can win the UEFA Champions League. We're not just going to spend money on anyone, but if we can get the biggest players in the world, and of course if the manager wants them, then we will get them."

Well. I guess even if this book was fictitious, I would have still been heavily inclined towards believing that it was indeed a true story. This books takes you from Amsterdam to the Borinage, to the Hague and Nuenen, Paris, and then off to sunny Arlesian earth. It puts the lives of the Impressionists in perspective. It makes you learn new things about colors and lines, and appreciate the naked brashness of reality. An unbelievable story of an unbelievable man - Vincent Van Gogh.

I fail to see whats special about this overhyped overpriced predictable piece of writing. Only provides good humour in fits and spurts, at best. The author tries to play the nonchalant narcissistic impersonation card but it turns out horribly wrong when he makes repeated jibes at planes and drugs he hardly knows about, it seems. Still, the charity goes on..

First of all, sincere apologies. It seems my internet connection (in a curious collusion with vox) has prevented me from posting a less apt pictorial representation of 'The General in his Labyrinth'. This Don Juan-esque father figure wrapped under the eternal blanket of ethereal old age is not what you should be looking at before reading this book.

Secondly, this comes, in part, as a testament to my ailing and fledgling memory. It is in fact its weakness that has forced me to contemplate writing a bit about this book imminently - for I would forget whatever interesting anecdotes I had.

The General's 'labyrinth' is expressed openly at the end of the book but it is not the central message of the book that i wish to talk about. Ofcourse, on the whole, this book shows you 'beauty' and the depths of 'simplicity', and how one is fortunate if one is able to look at his life in retrospect and have the ill humour to laugh about it. However, the secret of the 'unputdownability' (the utter claptrap that mohsin hamid manages to come up beggars belief) of this book is its slow detail. Crocodiles lazing around the River Magdalena - their mouths drooping open in search of butterflies. The General loving the fact that he has a hugeass window and outside there are guava trees - waiting for the sunlight to pierce through this euphemistic forest of sorts while listening to Captain Iturbide sing about forlorn tempests and lovers collapsing in each others arms.. listening to the sound of ripe guavas hitting the ground for the first time and revelling in that moment.

Its a really nice book.

Members of one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes have been spotted and photographed from the air near the Brazil-Peru border. The photos were taken during several flights over one of the remotest parts of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil’s Acre state.
‘We did the overflight to show their houses, to show they are there, to show they exist,’ said uncontacted tribes expert José Carlos dos Reis Meirelles Júnior. Meirelles works for FUNAI, the Brazilian government’s Indian affairs department. ‘This is very important because there are some who doubt their existence.’

Meirelles says that the group’s numbers are increasing. But other uncontacted groups in the region, whose homes have been photographed from the air, are in severe danger from illegal logging in Peru. Logging is driving uncontacted tribes over the border and could lead to conflict with the estimated five hundred uncontacted Indians already living on the Brazilian side.

‘What is happening in this region [of Peru] is a monumental crime against the natural world, the tribes, the fauna and is further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the ‘civilised’ ones, treat the world,’ said Meirelles.

There are more than one hundred uncontacted tribes worldwide, with more than half living in either Brazil or Peru. All are in grave danger of being forced off their land, killed and decimated by new diseases. Survival has launched an urgent campaign to get their land protected, and a unique film narrated by actress Julie Christie.

Survival’s director Stephen Corry said today, ‘These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist. The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct.’

For further information please contact Miriam Ross on (+44) (0)20 7687 8734 or email mr@survival-international.org

Act now to help uncontacted Indians

Please write a letter to Peru’s president asking him to recognise his country’s isolated Indians’ land rights – and by doing so protect uncontacted peoples on both sides of the Peru-Brazil border.
